UNESCO Policy on Education & ICMAER Mission

UNESCO Overview

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was established in 1945 with the vision that peaceful collaboration among nations must replace violent conflict resolution. Its mission is to secure the right of everyone to quality education, which is essential for the advancement of science, culture, and communication.

Quality Education for a Culture of Peace

UNESCO prioritizes education for a culture of peace to address violence, discrimination, exclusion, intolerance, and violations of basic human rights. Education is the cornerstone of constructing peaceful minds and fostering economic, social, and cultural development for all.

  • Transformation of curricula, teaching methods, and educational materials
  • Teacher training and professional development
  • School management and non-formal education
  • Broad, lifelong education promoting adaptability and multidisciplinary skills

Education is seen as “learning to live together”, enabling personal development and positive relationships among individuals, communities, and nations.

Quality Education for Sustainable Development

Sustainable development integrates human and ecological concerns, poverty alleviation, gender equality, human rights, health, human security, and intercultural dialogue. Higher education institutions play a key role through:

  • Interdisciplinary research and teaching
  • Policy-making and capacity building
  • Technology transfer
  • Building democratic, equitable, and ecologically-minded societies

The objective is to integrate sustainable development principles into all aspects of learning to tackle 21st-century social, economic, cultural, and environmental challenges.

Quality Education for All

The Education For All (EFA) movement, launched in 1990, emphasizes global access to quality education. UNESCO promotes intercultural dialogue, recognizing differences and encouraging respectful exchange of ideas.

Higher education strengthens student skills, prepares citizens for global interdependence, and fosters tolerant, respectful engagement across cultures.

Access and Success in Higher Education

High-quality higher education is essential for global competitiveness, employability, social justice, cohesion, and sustainable development. Equitable access considers socio-economic status, race, gender, disability, and geography.

UNESCO and Accreditation

UNESCO does not directly accredit or certify educational institutions. It collaborates with bodies such as:

UNESCO IAU – International Association of Universities

  • Represents higher education institutions from 150+ countries
  • Promotes freedom, justice, human dignity, and solidarity
  • Facilitates international cooperation and higher education development

Membership in the IAU is recognized as an international benchmark for educational quality.

ICMAER Commitment to UNESCO Policy

The International Centre for Martial Arts Education and Research (ICMAER), proposed as the World Martial Arts University, aligns with UNESCO’s policy on quality education for the 21st century.
