Sports for Development and Peace (SDP)

An ICMAER initiative using sports, martial arts and traditional games to promote social inclusion, peace and youth empowerment.

Overview

Sports for Development and Peace (SDP) harnesses the universal power of sport and play — including martial arts and traditional games — to reduce violence, strengthen social bonds, and empower children and youth in vulnerable communities. SDP combines practical programming, capacity building and research to create lasting social impact.

Core Components

Peacebuilding Activities
Structured games & sports that teach cooperation, rules-based play and emotional regulation.
Youth Leadership & Ambassadors
Training youth as facilitators, mediators and community role models.
Gender & Inclusion Programs
Safe spaces, girls’ clubs and adapted activities for children with disabilities.
Traditional Games & Culture
Revival of indigenous games to strengthen identity and intergenerational ties.

Expected Outcomes

  • Reduced violence and improved conflict resolution
  • Stronger social cohesion and community trust
  • Higher youth engagement in positive activities
  • Improved physical and mental health indicators

Monitoring & Research

Evidence-based design with M&E, baseline/endline studies and qualitative learning to measure behavioural change, social impact and program scalability. Findings are used to sharpen pedagogy and influence policy.

Aligned with UN International Day of Sport for Development & Peace, UNESCO QPE and the UN SDGs (3,4,5,10,16,17)
